Etimología

Al igual que Natu, su nombre podría ser una referencia a Atu, un dios samoano. Atu es también el nombre del primer hombre de la mitología samoana. La «x» podría provenir de exotic, exótico, por su apariencia. Podría decirse que su nombre viene de la palabra en inglés "chat", (refiriéndose a la capacidad de este Pokémon para entender el lenguaje humano) ya que a veces la x puede ser usada como ch. También puede provenir de la palabra en inglés statue, que significa estatua, tal vez refiriéndose a su quietud la mayoría del tiempo, referencia a una estatua.

Su nombre japonés, Natio, parece ser una corrupción lingüística de native (nativo en inglés).

Biología

Xatu tiene habilidades para predecir el futuro y ver el pasado. Se dice que con el ojo derecho ve el futuro y con el izquierdo ve el pasado, se sabe que esta es su actividad favorita. Es un Pokémon muy calmado y solitario. También es muy inteligente, ya que puede entender el lenguaje humano e incluso puede utilizar el lenguaje de las banderas si se le enseña. Xatu tiene sólo un dedo en sus patas, a diferencia de Natu, que tiene dos.

Es un Pokémon parecido a un loro, por lo que se entiende por qué puede aprender y entender los lenguajes creados o descubiertos por los humanos. También entiende la mayoría de los lenguajes Pokémon. También se asemeja a estatuas antiguas e indígenas como los tótem.

En cuanto a su comportamiento, Xatu tiende a estar quieto y en silencio durante todo el día. Muchas teorías han sido pensadas para explicar este comportamiento: Una de ellas explica que tiene visiones del pasado y del futuro, y que no se mueve debido a los temores que éstas le infunden. Otra teoría explica que debe hacer un sobreesfuerzo para concentrarse y no volverse loco por el número de visiones que observa simultáneamente. Esta es la razón por la que siempre tiene los ojos idos en el espacio sin fijar ningún objeto, casi nunca mira en el presente.

En la saga Pokémon Mundo Misterioso es un profeta, que indica al protagonista cómo ir a determinados lugares y encontrar determinados Pokémon. En estos juegos Gengar siempre contradice sus sabias palabras de aliento.

Con sus potentes poderes psíquicos es capaz de hacer ver a las personas escenas del pasado como si fuesen reales y modificar dichas escenas a voluntad. Con solo mirar a alguien a los ojos, Xatu puede leer su mente. Es un Pokémon que, como su especie indica, es místico y enigmático, el cual todavía tiene muchos misterios que deben estudiarse.
